Perfection
Okay people, lets face the facts here, music (or at least rock music) obtained perfection in the 70's.The 70's produced music that will live on forever. Our parents listened to bands like Foreigner, Zeppelin, and Rush, and we all listen to these bands, and I guarantee our children will too.Today's music is just a warped reflection of past glory in music. Take for example (and I know John will kill me) American Idiot. Its a good album, don't get me wrong, but if not for the 70's this album wouldn't exist. The idea of a concept album has been around for a very long time.Tommy, The Wall, and to a lesser extent, Aqualung are all concept albums that blow Greenday's album out of the water. You can't compare the drugged out journeys of some suburb kid to a def, dumb blind guy who plays pinball better than any other human being.Bands in the 70's knew their place. They were musicians, not social commentators. How does knowing the difference between scales and chords qualify you to say if the president is doing a good job? These bands were concerned with rock. They also existed in an era were ugly people could make it in the music scene. Take the Doobie Brothers. These men are not attractive in anyway, yet they made millions. If they were around today, people wouldn't give a shit about them. The 60's were good because rock was born, but it wasn't mature yet. The 80's were an era where rock music was secondary to the rock star lifestyle. The 90's were just angst ridden and didn't have anywhere to go. Grunge could only go so far before it crapped out completely. Now a days, musicians only want to complain about how horrible everything is around them in between lines of coke. Bright eyes is a bunch of bitches. Most of the whole "saddle creek" scene is the exact same. Most of the bands are just cookie cutter generic shit. Some try to do something new and get so artsy fartsy that its irritating. There's nowhere to go. It hit a glass ceiling and is having trouble breaking through it.
