Under Preassure
Not just a song by Queen, but a way of life for those of us in the fast paced world of being a student.Welcome to sophomore year, a different breed of year. Gone are the simple pleasures of first semester. The joys of a new existence, the novelty of college down the drain. It’s time for a reality check that has all the power of a pro hockey player. Now it’s time to realize if the world was meant for us to live in, we have to prove it. Internships and the like are now in front of our faces, and with that, a whole new level of bullshit. While scouring the earth to find an internship, we have to consider all the loose ends that will be dangling as we try to get ready for our future.Class, friends, and jobs all have to be completed. The essential hubbub that goes on in our daily lives, and that will crush us if we turn our heads for even a minute. And through it all we have to keep a cool mindset. A freak-out might feel good, but ultimately will be deadly. And sadly, these are our best years. We’ll look back on these, years from now, with a sigh and say “I wish I could do that again.”It’s always amazed me, that factor. The forget factor, man’s oddest ability, the ability to hate something while it happens, but pine for it after it has slipped away.Perhaps we just like to complain. We need to feel superior to ourselves by making us feel better than our surroundings, but ultimately, when things change (as they inevitably will) we realize our foolish ignorance and desire that bliss once more. It’s a cycle that goes back to our childhood.Being a kid didn’t seem all that great at the time, but, unless abused, most people would trade anything to experience it once again.I’ll take irony for a thousand, Alex. The seasonal march until death is a constant repeat of this pattern. Why, I have no idea.Until this and other masteries can be solved, there is only one thing that can truly be done.Sit down, shut up, and start applying. The elite of this world don’t have to worry about the future, but that’s not me. The good, not great, have margin for concern, again, not me. The mediocre have fear and the bad have terror.I have no idea which of those categories I am in.
